Covering a Lampshade with Handmade Paper
Equipment:
- A large piece of scrap paper to trace out your lampshade
- Pencil/rule/scissors
- Black sponge brush
- White glue solution (2-part water, 1-part glue) well mixed
- plastic garbage bag to cover your work surface.
- Hand made paper for covering your lampshade.
Directions:
Cover work surface with plastic. Lay the scrap paper on the table and using the seam line of the original shade, mark the top and bottom with a pencil mark. As you roll the lampshade across the paper draw a line following the arc of the shade. Repeat at the top of the lamp. Connect the top and bottom lines. Your pattern will look somewhat like a skirt. Add approx. 3/8" seam allowance to the top and bottom of your pattern and approx. 1" on one side. Cut out and place pattern on your hand made paper. Lightly trace out and then cut out. Brush the entire surface of your shade with the glue/water mix. Roll the shade onto the paper, smoothing it as you roll.
Apply a second layer of the glue water mix. Smooth out any bubbles and wrinkles. Brush glue / water mix around the bottom and top edges of the paper. Roll the paper under the lampshade edge using a bone folder or spoon to ease the paper into the crease. Place the shade on a container tall enough so the bottom does not touch the table surface. Leave to dry. The white glue / water mix works well with all types of handmade paper - unryu-mango-banana-sa. This is a great idea to give new life to your well-loved lampshades.
